Send Fook Shing: The Chinese Detective in Colonial Victoria

This article has recently been accepted for publication by History Australia.

It examines the important place of Fook Shing to the policing of Chinese immigrants in colonial Victoria, firstly under the colony's protectorate system and later through a specially appointed ‘Chinese detective’. It explores this through two elements: how law and order was maintained through a fusion of Chinese and British imperial methods and how Fook Shing came to sit at the intersect between hostile and sympathetic attitudes to Chinese in Australia.
